Britain plans to launch the sixth series of Skynet military communications satellites

Britain's Ministry of Defense plans to begin the final stage of the ground station management competition for the sixth series of Skynet military communications network satellites soon. Skynet, now operated by Airbus Defense and Space on behalf of the British Ministry of Defense, provides strategic communications services to the British Armed Forces and NATO.

The network includes five series of Skynet 1 to 5 satellites, the first of which was called Skynet 1A in 1969 and the last satellite Skynet 5D in 2012. So far, 14 Skynet satellites have been launched into orbit

The UK Department of Defense is now planning to buy the first new satellite of the sixth Skynet 6A series from Airbus. According to Airbus, the company hopes that the contract for the purchase of this satellite will be finalized by the middle of this year.
